Veteran death metal outfit Suffocation have issued an official response following now-former drummer Eric Morotti’s public statement announcing his departure from the band on Thursday, April 10th. According to the group, the split was not voluntary on Morotti’s part, and they are pushing back on what they describe as inaccurate claims made in his initial comments.
In a statement released by the band, Suffocation clarified that the decision to part ways with Morotti had already been made days prior, citing scheduling conflicts tied to his involvement with Sanguisugabogg.
“To address Eric Morotti’s false claims made in his social media posts on April 10th and to the news outlets who picked it up, Suffocation would like to take a moment to set the record straight.
Last week, the decision was made by Suffocation to part ways with Eric Morotti due to his conflicting schedule with Sanguisugabogg, which affected Suffocation’s schedule for the year. Eric was notified of his termination on April 8 by email, which is released with this statement. It is unfortunate that Eric decided to falsify claims and take this to a negative place forcing us to make this statement.
Regardless, we wish him nothing but the best of luck on his future endeavors.”
To further support their timeline of events, the band also shared a screenshot of a message sent by guitarist Terrance Hobbs on April 8th, directly informing Morotti of the decision.
“After a lot of communication with the band and all involved .,,Eric, suffocation has made the decision to let you go from the band due to scheduling differences and touring obligations…it’s unfortunate as we had a good run last decade!!! So with that being said ,best of luck to you and your music career as well as your up and coming gigs !!!!! If you want you can have wes perhaps come and grab your gear here as i’d like o make space here in the garage before we start our next tours and gigs..“
Morotti had initially stated that he chose to step away from the band, but this latest update from Suffocation paints a different picture, indicating the split stemmed from internal logistical challenges rather than a personal decision to leave.
As of now, Morotti has not issued a follow-up response addressing the band’s claims. Suffocation are expected to move forward with their touring plans while seeking a replacement behind the kit.
